Screen-Time Learning: Can YouTube Replace the Textbook?
A Mark
For months, I struggled with organic chemistry, finding our textbook incredibly dense and dry. Out of sheer desperation, I began looking for online alternatives. Initially, I was quite reluctant to rely on YouTube because I had always taken it for granted that the platform was exclusively for leisure, like music videos or gaming. Bouncing back from that bias was a turning point. I discovered a chemistry channel featuring vivid, colorful animations of molecular bonds. Seeing the atoms move made the complex concepts click instantly. Furthermore, watching these short clips after a grueling day at university became quite therapeutic; it allowed me to mentally unwind while effortlessly absorbing complex data. My professor recently noticed my sudden grasp of the subject during seminars. Although some of my classmates complain that videos can distract you from doing real coursework, for me, this visual aid has become an indispensable asset that I simply couldn’t do without.

Balancing my physics modules with advanced mathematics is a constant challenge, and I frequently find myself falling behind. That was until a classmate recommended a specialized science channel. What immediately struck me was how much more control it gave me over my study routine. If a mathematical derivation seems too intricate, I can easily modify the playback speed or pause the clip to catch my breath. This flexibility means I am no longer driven by the frantic pace of a live lecture hall. Consequently, there has been a significant transformation in my performance, with a noticeable rise in my latest mid-term exam results. Nevertheless, you have to be disciplined; it’s easy to zone out and find yourself watching unrelated videos instead of studying. My father originally worried that this method was just a lazy shortcut, but he has recently come to terms with its academic effectiveness.
C Sam
When a peer first suggested using video content to prepare for my cellular biology exams, I dismissed the idea. I genuinely believed that watching clips would be an inefficient use of my limited study time, which I felt should be spent memorizing papers. I soon had to eat my words. The channel I subscribe to utilizes magnificent multi-dimensional models that illustrate complex organic mechanisms, such as cell division, with breathtaking accuracy. It makes the abstract text in our syllabus feel tangible. What I value most, however, is the active comment section below each upload. It allows me to interact with a vibrant community of peers from all over the world, swapping study tips and clarifying confusing points together. While some critics argue that online communities can foster misinformation, the moderators on this specific channel ensure that the discussions remain highly accurate and educational.
D Chloe
I’ve always been a visual learner, so traditional textbooks often leave me cold. To get my head around macroeconomic models, I rely on animated history and economics channels. The best creators use quirky narrative elements and storytelling to make demanding conceptual ideas remarkably easy to follow, which keeps me fully focused. On the other hand, a major drawback is the lack of depth on certain popular platforms. I would caution anyone that many content creators tend to sacrifice essential details for the sake of entertainment, leaving out crucial data just to keep the video short and snappy. Therefore, you cannot rely on them exclusively. I always cross-reference what I watch with my lecture notes to ensure I haven’t missed any core requirements. My tutors are generally supportive of this hybrid approach, provided we don’t treat video platforms as an absolute substitute for traditional research.

Reading 2
You are going to read an article about four students discussing the impact of screen time on their learning retention and overall eye health.
For questions 1-10, choose from the people (A-D). The people may be chosen more than once.
Which person
1 admits that reading on a screen causes them to miss important information?
2 relies on a specific wearable item to reduce the physical discomfort of screen use?
3 acknowledges that while screens are physically demanding, they are excellent for categorising study materials?
4 experienced a physical symptom that required a change in their optical prescription?
5 uses a software tool designed to interrupt their studying for the sake of their health?
6 noticed a lack of moisture in their eyes after long study sessions?

9 points out that substituting digital typing for traditional writing negatively affected their memory?
10 found that interactive online features were a constant temptation during study hours?
The Digital Dilemma: Screens, Study, and Sight
A Mia
When I first started university, I took it for granted that bringing my laptop to lectures was the most efficient way to study. I could type significantly faster than I could write, so I thought I was getting ahead. However, when it came to revising for my end-of-term exams, I realised my learning retention had taken a massive hit. Because I was blindly typing everything the professor said, I wasn’t actually processing the information. Substituting handwriting for a keyboard meant the concepts just didn’t stick in my brain. On top of that, staring at a glaring screen for hours on end took a severe physical toll. I began suffering from incredibly dry eyes, to the point where they felt gritty and irritated by the late afternoon. Eventually, I had to come to terms with the fact that my digital-only approach wasn’t working. I’ve since gone back to jotting down my notes in a traditional paper notebook, which has miraculously solved both my memory issues and my eye discomfort.

There is no denying that the internet is an invaluable resource, but for me, it is also a minefield of distractions. During my first year, my screen time skyrocketed. I would sit down to research a topic, but the constant temptation of social media notifications and interactive websites would inevitably break my concentration. Consequently, I was spending twice as long on assignments while retaining half as much. Furthermore, the prolonged exposure to blue light triggered excruciating migraines. To combat this, I invested in a pair of specialised blue-light blocking glasses. Relying on this wearable accessory has significantly reduced my headaches. To fix my focus issues, I adopted a strict time-management technique, working in intense twenty-five-minute bursts followed by a five-minute screen-free break. Taking control of my schedule in this way has helped me bounce back academically. I still use my computer daily, but I am much more disciplined about how and when I look at the screen.

I am a highly visual learner, and I absolutely rely on digital mind maps to structure my revision. Acknowledging the benefits of technology is important; having a tablet is brilliant for categorising vast amounts of study material into neat, colour-coded folders. I would be completely lost without my digital filing system. Nevertheless, I can’t ignore the negative impact this intense screen time has on my overall eye health. Towards the end of the semester, my eyes often feel heavy and strained. To prevent myself from staring at the monitor endlessly, I downloaded a clever application that completely locks my screen for three minutes every hour. Using this software tool forces me to look away and give my eye muscles a much-needed rest. While I haven’t noticed any major decline in my ability to memorise facts, I do worry about the long-term physical damage. Striking a balance between the convenience of technology and physical well-being is a constant challenge.
D Noah
As a literature student, I am required to get through mountains of reading every week. Initially, to save money, I downloaded all my core texts as digital PDFs. However, I quickly discovered that scrolling through hundreds of pages on a screen severely affected my comprehension. I found myself merely skimming the paragraphs and frequently missing vital thematic details. It seems that the physical act of turning a page helps anchor the information in my memory. Consequently, I realised I had no choice but to produce hard copies of the most important chapters if I wanted to fully absorb the material. Moreover, the constant screen glare caused my vision to become slightly blurred over time. When I finally visited the optician, I was informed that my eyesight had deteriorated, requiring a stronger prescription for my lenses. Since upgrading my glasses and relying more on printed texts, both my academic performance and my eye health have improved considerably.
