The Magic of Laughter

For five years, I worked as an accountant in a quiet office. It was a safe job, but I always felt like something was missing. Since I was a teenager, my real passion had been magic. I spent my weekends performing at children’s parties and small local events. Last year, I finally made a huge decision. I decided to leave my comfortable office job and become a full-time professional magician. My parents were quite worried, but I was determined to follow my dream.

At first, it was hard to find enough work, but then I got an amazing opportunity. A popular theatre in the city centre asked me to perform in their Saturday night show. I was incredibly excited. For weeks, I practised a very complicated new trick involving a disappearing watch and a wooden box. I wanted everything to be absolutely perfect for my first big stage appearance.

When the night of the show arrived, the theatre was completely full. Things were going really well until I reached my final, most important trick. I borrowed a watch from a man in the front row, placed it in the box, and said the magic words. But when I opened the box to show it was empty, the watch was still sitting right there. The mechanism had broken! My heart sank, and I froze in front of the silent audience, not knowing what to do.

I felt completely embarrassed, but I knew I couldn’t just walk off the stage. So, I took a deep breath and smiled. “Well,” I said loudly, “I think this watch is just too beautiful to disappear! In fact, it’s so smart, it refused to listen to me.” The audience suddenly burst out laughing. I continued to make a few more jokes about my own terrible magic skills, and the crowd loved it. The tension in the room disappeared completely.

When the show finished, people actually clapped louder than I expected. That night taught me a very important lesson. I realised that being a good magician isn’t just about technical perfection. It is really about connecting with the audience and making sure they have a good time. Even though my trick went wrong, my performance was a success, and I have never regretted my career choice since.

     (B) The audience was too noisy for the trick to work.

Answer Key & Explanations

1   A – The text states in the first paragraph that his “real passion had been magic” and he was “determined to follow my dream” by leaving his comfortable office job. This paraphrases to wanting to do something he was truly passionate about.

B – In the second paragraph, the writer says, “For weeks, I practised a very complicated new trick.” This is a factually correct paraphrase for spending a lot of time learning how to do a difficult trick.

3   C – Paragraph three explains that when he opened the box, the watch was still there because “The mechanism had broken!” This maps perfectly to the equipment he was using failing to work properly.

4   C – The fourth paragraph states that the writer made jokes about the watch and his own skills, causing the audience to laugh and the tension to disappear. This matches using humour to make the audience relax and enjoy themselves.

5   B – This option successfully captures the global meaning and the specific lesson in the final paragraph: “I realised that being a good magician isn’t just about technical perfection. It is really about connecting with the audience and making sure they have a good time.”

The Sweet Taste of Success

My name is Oliver, and a year ago, my life was completely different. I was living in a busy city, working in a crowded office, and spending hours every day travelling on noisy trains. Although the salary was good, I felt stressed and exhausted. I had always loved nature, so I finally decided to do something brave. I left my comfortable city life, bought a small piece of land in the countryside, and started my own honey farm. I was incredibly excited about becoming a beekeeper, expecting it to be a peaceful and relaxing job.

However, I soon discovered that looking after bees is much more difficult than I had imagined. First, I had to spend a lot of money on wooden hives, special tools, and protective clothing. Then, I had to learn how to handle the insects carefully. My biggest challenge was getting used to the bees themselves. Even though I wore a thick protective suit and gloves, the bees would sometimes find a way inside.

During my second month, I had a particularly bad day. I was checking the hives when the bees became angry, and I got stung three times on my arm. The stings were extremely painful, and my arm swelled up for days. As I sat in my house feeling sorry for myself, I seriously questioned my choice. I started to wonder if quitting my safe, comfortable office job had been a terrible mistake. I almost decided to sell the equipment and return to the city.

Fortunately, I didn’t give up. I continued studying how to keep the bees calm, and by the end of the summer, it was time for my first harvest. I carefully opened the hives and removed the frames filled with wax and honey. When I finally poured the fresh honey into a glass jar, I was amazed. It was a beautiful, clear golden colour.

When I tasted a spoonful of that delicious honey, I smiled. It was the sweetest, most amazing thing I had ever eaten. In that single moment, all the pain from the stings and the long hours of hard work simply vanished. I knew then that despite the difficulties, becoming a beekeeper was the best decision I have ever made.

1   What was Oliver’s main reason for becoming a beekeeper?

     (A) He wanted to spend more time travelling.

     (B) He needed to earn a better salary.

     (C) He wanted to escape his stressful city lifestyle.

     (D) He was invited to work on a countryside farm.

2   What does Oliver say about his beekeeping equipment in the second paragraph?

     (A) The protective suit kept him completely safe from the insects.

     (B) He occasionally got stung despite wearing protective clothing.

     (C) He had to borrow money to buy the expensive wooden hives.

     (D) The special tools were harder to use than he had expected.

3   After the bees stung his arm, Oliver

     (A) wondered if he should return to his previous job.

     (B) decided to sell all his equipment immediately.

     (C) realised he needed to buy a better protective suit.

     (D) went to the hospital because his arm swelled up.

How did Oliver feel when he tasted his honey for the first time?

     (A) Disappointed that he hadn’t produced more jars.

     (B) Relieved that the harvest didn’t take a long time.

     (C) Proud that he could finally sell it to his old colleagues.

     (D) Glad because it made all his hard work feel worthwhile.

5   What would Oliver write in a text message to a friend?

     (A) I miss my comfortable office job. Beekeeping is too painful, and I am moving back to the city.

     (B) Starting this farm was incredibly tough, but tasting my own sweet honey proves I made the right choice.

     (C) I’ve just harvested my first honey! It’s delicious, but I regret spending all my savings on the equipment.

     (D) My new life in the countryside is exactly as relaxing and peaceful as I always imagined it would be.

Answer Key & Explanations

C – In paragraph 1, Oliver says he “felt stressed and exhausted” in the city and “finally decided to do something brave” by moving to the countryside, which paraphrases as wanting to escape his stressful lifestyle.

2   B – In paragraph 2, Oliver explains that “Even though I wore a thick protective suit and gloves, the bees would sometimes find a way inside,” meaning his clothing didn’t completely protect him from being stung.

3   A – In paragraph 3, after being stung, Oliver “seriously questioned my choice” and wondered if quitting his safe office job “had been a terrible mistake,” meaning he considered going back.

4   D – In paragraph 5, Oliver says that upon tasting the honey, “all the pain… and the long hours of hard work simply vanished,” showing the reward made his struggles completely worthwhile.

5   B – This option captures the global meaning and Oliver’s emotional arc. It acknowledges the unexpected challenges and pain (incredibly tough) but concludes with his final realization that the sweet honey made the difficult career change the best decision he ever made.

Becoming a ‘Nose’

Since I was a teenager, I have always been fascinated by everyday smells. While my friends cared about buying trendy clothes or listening to new music, I collected different soaps, spices, and flowers just to smell them. Last year, I decided to turn my unusual passion into a career. I packed my bags and moved to a famous perfume school in the south of France to train as a ‘nose’—a professional fragrance creator. I was incredibly excited, although my parents worried about me living so far away from home.

However, the reality of the daily training was much harder than I had ever imagined. Every morning, the teachers gave us hundreds of small bottles containing different chemical oils. We had to smell them, identify them correctly, and remember their complicated scientific names. Because of the strong, heavy smells in the classroom, I went home every evening with a terrible headache. I often had to lie down in a dark, quiet room just to feel normal again. There were definitely days when I wondered if I was physically strong enough to do this job.

After six months of exhausting study, the school organised a big competition for the students. We had to create a completely new perfume, and the winner would get the chance to work with a famous international brand. Instead of using traditional French flowers like roses or lavender, I decided to do something different. I mixed the scent of fresh summer rain with the smell of sweet orange, which reminded me of the garden at my childhood home. It was a risky choice, but I wanted to show the judges my true personality.

When the judges finally announced the results, I was so shocked that I couldn’t speak. They chose my perfume as the winner! They explained that my fragrance was completely unique and showed that I had a very rare talent for balancing unusual scents together. Hearing those positive words made all the difficult days and painful headaches completely worth it. Now, I am busy working on my first professional fragrance. I still get headaches sometimes, but I finally feel confident that I belong in the perfume industry.

     (A) I can’t believe I won the competition! It was easy to make, so I’m glad the judges liked my traditional rose perfume.

     (B) The school is amazing, but I’m going to quit. The headaches are just too painful and I don’t think I have any real talent.

     (C) My unusual perfume won first prize! The training has been painful and exhausting, but I finally know I can be a successful ‘nose’.

     (D) I’m moving back home today. I miss my childhood garden too much, and learning about chemical oils isn’t what I want to do.
