A Cold Morning Rescue
My name is Max, and I am fifteen years old. Last Tuesday morning was incredibly cold. I was sitting in my warm kitchen, eating a big bowl of cereal for breakfast before school. Suddenly, I looked out of the window and saw my neighbor, Mr. Jones. He was sitting in his old car, but it wasn’t moving.
I quickly put on my thick winter coat and ran outside into the snow. Mr. Jones looked very worried. He told me that he had a really important meeting at his office, but his car wouldn’t start. When he turned the key, the engine just made a strange clicking noise and then stopped.
I love fixing things, and my dad often teaches me about engines. I asked Mr. Jones to open the front of the car. I looked inside carefully and noticed a problem immediately. One of the battery cables was loose. I used my hands to push it back into the correct place.
I asked Mr. Jones to turn the key one more time. Suddenly, the car started perfectly! Mr. Jones smiled and thanked me for my brilliant help. I felt extremely proud as I walked back into my house. Helping my neighbor was definitely the best start to my day!

Feeling at Home in the City
My name is Emma, and I am fourteen years old. Six months ago, my family moved to a very big and busy city. At first, I was quite unhappy. There were too many tall buildings, noisy cars, and people everywhere. I came from a quiet town, so I believed that the city was a dangerous place to live.
Everything changed when we started talking to the people in our apartment building. Our next-door neighbour is an older woman called Mrs Green. She always says hello and sometimes gives us fresh biscuits. Across the hall, there is a family with a boy named Tom. He goes to my high school, and we often walk to our classes together in the morning.
One afternoon last month, I lost my house key on my way back from school. I stood outside my apartment door, feeling very worried and afraid. Suddenly, Mrs Green opened her door. She smiled, invited me inside, and gave me some fruit juice. I stayed in her comfortable living room until my parents finished work.
That day, I understood something important. A big city does not have to be a scary place. When you live close to kind and friendly neighbours, you always have someone to help you. Now, I feel completely safe and I really love my new city life.

A Thank-You Note for Our Neighbor
My name is Jack, and I am fifteen years old. I live on a long street with many tall trees. In autumn, the trees look beautiful, but they drop thousands of brown and yellow leaves on the pavement. This makes walking to school quite difficult and sometimes dangerous when it rains.
Next door to me lives Mr. Evans. He is an older man who always helps people in our area. Every morning, before anyone else wakes up, he takes his large brush and sweeps all the leaves away from the front of our houses. He never asks for money or even a simple thank you.
Last week, I decided to do something nice for him. I bought a small box of chocolates from the local shop. Then, I wrote a letter to say thank you for his hard work. I told him that my family and I really like how safe and clean he makes our street for everyone.
I walked to his house and left the chocolates and the note by his front door. The next day, when I came back from school, Mr. Evans was waiting by his gate. He smiled and thanked me for the kind gift. It felt great to show him that we notice what he does.
1 Why does Jack say the leaves can be a problem?
(A) They make the street unsafe to walk on in wet weather.
(B) They fall on the tall trees and look beautiful.

(A) To pay him for cleaning the local shop.
(B) To show he was grateful for his help.
(C) To explain how to make the street clean.
4 What happened the day after Jack left the gift?
(A) Mr. Evans left a note by Jack’s front door.
(B) Jack waited by the gate after school.
(C) The neighbor was happy to see Jack and speak to him.
5 What is Jack’s main reason for writing this text?

(B) to complain about the dirty pavement on his street
(C) to give advice on how to sweep autumn leaves
