Mark’s Safer Journey to School
Fourteen-year-old Mark lives only three kilometers from his school. However, a few months ago, it took him almost forty minutes to get there by bus. The roads were always full of cars, and the air was very dirty. Mark hated waiting in the traffic every morning, so he decided to make a change.
He bought a second-hand bicycle and started riding to school. Then, he had a great idea. He wanted to start a ‘cycle to school’ club to reduce the number of cars. First, he spoke to his classmates. Then, he designed a colourful poster to put on the wall outside the library. He didn’t ask his teachers for help because he wanted to do it all by himself.
At first, only five students joined the club. Many parents were worried about the busy roads. Because of this, Mark spent a weekend looking for safer streets. He found a fantastic route that went through the local park and past the river. When the parents saw this safe path, they allowed their children to cycle.
Now, there are over forty teenagers in Mark’s club, and the street outside the school is much quieter. Next term, Mark is going to invite a mechanic to teach the students how to fix their bikes. He feels proud because his idea is really helping the environment.

Leo’s Bicycle Project
Fifteen-year-old Leo goes to a very large secondary school in the city. Last year, he noticed that some of his classmates often arrived late and looked completely tired. They lived very far away and had to walk for nearly an hour because a daily bus ticket was just too expensive for them. Leo loves fixing machines, so he decided to find a way to help his friends.
He started by asking his neighbours if they had any old, broken bicycles. It was a great idea because many people had bikes in their garages that they never used, and they were happy to give them to him. Leo collected six bikes in the first few days. He then spent all his free time at the weekend cleaning the dirt off them.
However, making the bicycles safe to ride was actually quite difficult. Leo sometimes had to buy new tyres or a chain from the shop with his own pocket money. When there was a really hard problem with the brakes, he asked his uncle to show him what to do. It took a lot of practice and time, but Leo never gave up.
So far, Leo has given ten repaired bicycles to students at his school. His classmates are extremely pleased because their journey to school is much faster and cheaper now.
