Liam: Hi, I’m Liam, and I want to tell you about a recent weekend trip I took to the coast, and a rather expensive lesson I learned about hiring sports gear. I decided to head down to the coast for a quick weekend getaway. Most people visit the area for its historic castle, but the main draw for me was the waves, which are supposedly some of the best in the country.
I’m a keen surfer, but unfortunately, I couldn’t bring my own equipment on this journey. I was initially worried that my little car wouldn’t be big enough to carry it inside. However, the real issue was that my roof rack had completely snapped a few days prior, meaning I had absolutely no way to transport my gear and had to leave it behind.
Once I arrived and checked into my accommodation, I set about finding a place to hire what I needed. I walked straight down towards the pier, assuming there’d be an obvious surf shop right on the beachfront. Instead, after asking a local, I eventually located a tiny rental hut tucked away behind a supermarket, quite a walk from the sand.
When the owner told me the price for a day’s hire, I nearly walked straight back out the door. I was expecting to pay a small deposit and a modest hourly charge. But the daily rental fee was so exorbitant it almost made me reconsider the whole trip. I mean, it felt like I was buying a fraction of the board just to borrow it!
I stood there doing the math in my head, feeling quite frustrated. I thought about saving the cash to pay for a better hotel room for the night. Yet, I suddenly realised I’d easily blow that same amount on a fancy restaurant meal without thinking twice. Seeing it from that perspective, I resigned myself to the cost and handed over my credit card.
The guy behind the counter then handed me my gear. Because it was a rental place, I was expecting to be given one of those heavy foam boards they hand out to absolute beginners. Surprisingly, he gave me a sleek fibreglass board, which was incredibly lightweight and perfect for my intermediate level.
Walking down to the shore with the board under my arm, I was bracing myself for a really bitter wind, as it was quite a cloudy afternoon. As it turned out, the water temperature was remarkably mild for the time of year, so I paddled out feeling quite comfortable and ready to go.
Out in the water, it was quite crowded with other people. I usually try to strike up a conversation with the local surfers to get some tips about the currents. On this occasion, though, it was the lifeguards who gave me some brilliant advice on where the best breaks were forming, which really helped me out.
After two solid hours of catching some fantastic swells, I finally headed back to the beach, utterly exhausted but thrilled. Some people surf primarily for the intense physical workout it provides. For me, however, the mental clarity I get from being out in the ocean, entirely focused on the horizon, makes every single penny of that exorbitant rental cost completely worth it.
So, I’ve accepted that paying a premium is sometimes just a necessary evil of traveling light. Next time I head to the coast, I might look into borrowing a friend’s gear if they live nearby. Actually, I’m seriously considering investing in an inflatable board, because they pack down small into a backpack and are so much easier to travel with. I guess we’ll see!

Liam: Hi everyone, my name’s Liam, and I’m a driver for Rapid Thrills, an adventure tourism operator. I’m here to tell you a bit about what it’s like to experience an adrenaline-fuelled jet-boating ride with us. People often ask me where we operate. Some people think our trips take place on a large lake, which is common for water sports, but actually, the entire route is navigated along a fast-flowing river. It provides the ultimate unpredictable playground for our high-speed boats.
Before we even let anyone step aboard, we have a strict procedure to follow. Safety is, of course, our absolute top priority. I know many of you might expect to be handed a heavy helmet right away, especially given the extreme nature of the ride. Instead, a life jacket is the very first mandatory piece of equipment everyone must put on. We ensure they are securely fastened before moving forward.
Once everyone is geared up, you get a good look at our vessels. If you wander around the back, you might look for a traditional propeller in the water. However, these machines are uniquely propelled by a powerful water jet. This brilliant piece of engineering sucks water in and blasts it out, allowing us to skim over incredibly shallow depths—sometimes just ten centimetres of water!
As we leave the dock and pull out into the main current, new passengers usually anticipate a gentle cruise to get used to the motion. But in reality, the acceleration is virtually immediate, pushing you right back into your seat as we reach speeds of up to eighty kilometres per hour in mere seconds. It’s quite a shock to the system!
The absolute highlight for most people on the trip is our signature maneuver. You might have seen speedboats doing sharp turns on television, but we execute a complete 360-degree spin. I’ll give a quick hand signal, turn the wheel, and the boat rotates entirely on its own axis. It always gets a massive cheer from the crowd.
It’s not solely about the extreme thrills, though; the environment is stunning. I always tell my passengers to keep their eyes peeled. Tourists frequently ask me if they’ll spot bears roaming the banks, but it’s actually eagles that you are most likely to see. They often soar high above the cliffs, hunting for fish.
About halfway through the adrenaline-packed trip, the landscape shifts dramatically. We don’t head out into an open bay; instead, we navigate straight into a very tight canyon. The rock walls rise vertically on either side and feel close enough to reach out and touch, which makes the speed feel even more intense.
You’d think people would be absolutely terrified during this part, perhaps closing their eyes in fear. Yet, glancing in my rearview mirror at the passengers, laughter is the most common reaction I hear over the deafening roar of the engine. It’s a purely joyful release of adrenaline.
Naturally, everyone wants to remember this incredible experience. You might be severely tempted to use your smartphone to take a selfie, but I strongly advise against it, as it’s almost guaranteed to get soaked or dropped into the water. Don’t worry, though; we have a fixed camera securely mounted on the front of the boat to capture all your fantastic expressions during the ride.
If you’re wondering when the optimum time to visit is, lots of folks automatically assume the height of summer is the only viable option. Actually, spring is my absolute favourite season to run these tours. This is because the melting snow means the water levels are at their highest, making the rapids exceptionally thrilling. We hope to see you out on the water soon!
