Leo: Hi everyone. My name's Leo, and today I'm going to tell you about an incredible weekend trip I recently took to a famous coastal castle here in Scotland. Most of my university classmates travel up to these historic sites to complete a photography assignment for their coursework. However, my primary motivation was a bit different; I went there specifically to shoot a short film for my media studies portfolio. I figured a dramatic ruin would be the perfect location.
Getting to the remote peninsula was the first major hurdle. I had originally looked into catching the express coastal bus, as it’s generally the cheapest option for students. But after reading some online reviews about the scenic route, I ultimately decided to book a ticket for the passenger ferry instead. It was definitely the right choice, as the views from the water were absolutely spectacular.
After arriving at the small harbour, we had to navigate our way to the castle grounds. I had pictured a paved tourist path leading all the way up to the main gates. In reality, the approach was much more rugged. To get over a deep ravine, we actually had to traverse a rather wobbly wooden bridge. It felt like a true adventure before we had even reached the site!
As we approached the summit, I got my camera equipment ready. I had been desperately hoping for bright sunshine to highlight the details of the stone. But as it turned out, the entire fortress was completely shrouded in a thick morning mist. I was initially disappointed, but looking back, the eerie yet striking spectacle of the fog swirling around the ancient ruins gave the footage an incredibly dramatic and atmospheric quality.
Once we made it into the central courtyard, I needed to gather some factual context for my project. I briefly considered buying a glossy guidebook from the visitor kiosk, but then I ended up having a long conversation with a friendly park ranger who was on duty. He generously shared some fascinating local legends and architectural facts that weren't printed anywhere else.
He pointed out several unique features of the exterior. While the vast majority of tourists spend their time marveling at the sheer height of the defensive walls, I found myself completely captivated by the perfectly preserved round towers located at each corner. The stonework on them was remarkably intricate for something built so long ago.
Eventually, we moved inside the main structure to explore the gloomy interior. My friends were eager to rush upstairs and see the grand dining room, which is the most famous part of the castle. However, I lingered in the basement because I was utterly fascinated by a small, dark prison cell. Seeing where captives were held centuries ago really brought the harsh reality of medieval life into perspective.
The coastal location also offers some fantastic wildlife watching opportunities. After emerging from the basement, we stood on the battlements with our binoculars. We spent ages scanning the waves, really hoping to catch sight of a pod of dolphins. We didn't have any luck with those, but we were absolutely delighted to spot a huge grey seal resting on the rocks below.
You always have to be prepared for the climate to shift quickly on the coast. The morning forecast had confidently predicted nothing worse than a light shower. We were completely caught off guard when a violent thunderstorm suddenly rolled in from the ocean! We had to sprint into an old guardhouse and wait for nearly forty minutes until it was safe to go back outside.
Before catching our transport back to the city, we stopped by the little gift shop near the exit. I picked up a thick history book, but I quickly realised it would be far too heavy to carry in my backpack. Instead, I eventually opted to purchase a beautifully crafted ceramic mug as a souvenir of the trip. It sits on my desk now and always reminds me of that fantastic, misty morning.

Liam: Hi everyone, my name is Liam, and today I’m going to talk to you about a thrilling excursion I recently took to explore the stone ruins of an ancient fortification, which sits high up on a rocky crag overlooking the sea. Most of my friends naturally assumed I was heading there because I love hiking. I initially thought of visiting after catching part of a travel documentary on television, but it was actually a fascinating feature in an architecture magazine that firmly made up my mind to organise the trip.
Getting to the remote site was quite an adventure in itself. We originally thought we could just catch a bus straight from the nearest train station, but we discovered the weekend services had been cancelled. So, we ended up driving instead, and because the main visitor car park was closed, we had to park our vehicle at a coastal village about three miles away.
The journey on foot to reach the rocky crag was genuinely spectacular, if a little tiring. To access the fortress at the summit, we anticipated climbing a set of steep stairs that had been built for tourists. However, the route simply consisted of a narrow track winding precariously up the cliff side. There was a sturdy rope to hold onto, but it was still quite a nerve-wracking experience!
As we carefully made our way along the path, I was incredibly eager to get my first proper glimpse of the ancient structure. I'd seen numerous professional pictures where it looked very imposing against a clear blue sky. But on that particular morning, the whole crag was covered in thick fog, which honestly gave the fortress an incredibly mysterious and almost ghostly atmosphere.
Once we finally made it safely inside the main gates, we had to decide how to explore the vast site. I normally prefer to just download a standard audio guide app to my smartphone to save a bit of cash. Instead, we decided to pay a little extra to be shown around by a local historian. That was a brilliant decision, as he really brought the history of the ruins to life with his captivating stories.
He took us around the exterior fortifications first. You might logically expect the enormous wooden gates to be the most impressive part of the castle's defences. In reality, it was the sheer scale of the defensive walls that completely took my breath away; we learned that they were over five metres thick in certain places, which is astonishing!
Then we went into the interior of the main ruins. My friend, who was travelling with me, was absolutely desperate to go down and explore the dark underground dungeons. I wasn't so keen on doing that, and I found myself much more drawn to the beautifully carved arches in the banquet hall. I spent ages admiring the space and imagining the grand feasts they once had there.
The rugged area surrounding the rocky crag is also renowned for its unique wildlife. After the tour, we spent ages scanning the sky with our binoculars, desperately hoping to spot some rare golden eagles. We didn't have any luck with those, but we were absolutely amazed to see a small herd of wild goats nimbly scaling the steep, jagged rocks just below us.
You have to be very careful, though, as the climate on the coast can change incredibly rapidly. The local weather forecast had confidently predicted light rain for the entire afternoon, which is usually manageable. However, we were caught completely off guard when a sudden hailstorm struck out of nowhere! We were forced to run and take shelter in one of the old stone watchtowers for twenty minutes until the harsh weather passed.
Before we headed back down that precarious path to the car, we stopped by the small gift shop near the exit. I briefly considered purchasing a heavy history book about the region's medieval past, but I really didn't want to carry it all the way back. Ultimately, I settled on a beautiful replica silver coin as a memento of the trip. It was a truly unforgettable day out, and I highly recommend visiting if you ever get the chance!
